Malta is a country south of Italy. Malta comprises five islands—Malta (the largest), Gozo, Comino, and the uninhabited islets of Kemmunett (Comminotto) and Filfla.

It is a country that combines two cultures. The culture of South Europe and this of North Africa.
A country full of contrasts, full of colors, friendly people, delicious food and wonderful beaches.

In this post we will focus in the main island of Malta, Malta.

History of Malta

Malta is a country with huge history. The archeologists and the researchers found evidence that Malta has been inhabited for more than 7000 years.

At the year around 800 BC the Phoenicians have conquered the island. At the year 217 BC the ownership of the island changed hands to the Romans.

Malta was well known for its honey, wine and roses. Malta changed ownerships a lot of times and only at 1964 could get its independence.

Since May 2004 Malta belongs to the European Union family.

What to do there

Malta is an island full of diversities. Everything in Malta is something that is worth to see.

If you are a person that likes city trips Around the capital of Malta, Valetta there are many small cities you can explore such as Sliema, Gzira, Msida and Ta’ Xbiex. The capital of Malta, Valetta, with a population of near 6.000 inhabitans is a very small  and compact capital which you can explore in a few days.

Malta has a very nice transportation system with Buses. With only one Weekly Card, called Explore Card, you can get on any Bus that belongs to the Malta Public Transport. You can get one such card directly in the Airtport of Malta. The cost as of 2023 is 21 Euros for this 7 days Card. (More info here)

With this Weekly Ticket you can visit any beach in Malta since the Bus System of Malta is pretty extensive.

One of the most well known beaches in Malta is Ghadira Bay in the north part of the island Malta. Then there are also other known beaches that I highly recommend such as the Golden Bay beach and the Qarraba Bay.

What to eat there

Of course for an Island that respects itself like Malta the fish dishes couldn’t be more fresh.

One of the most popular dishes in Malta is swordfish. Give it absolutely a try.

There is a huge Variety of Hotels in Malta. Choose the one that meets your needs.

Best locations that I personally suggest are Sliema , Msida, then the capital of Malta Valetta has also some interesting offerings.

I personally stayed in the Carlton Hotel in Sliema (Review comes) and I was very satisfied.

How to get there

You can visit Malta with 2 ways either by plane or by boat/ferry.

The Ferry needs approximately 2 hours from Pozzalo a small city in the south part of Sicilia in Italy until the Capital of Malta, Valetta. Virtu Ferries is the company that is doing such transfers.

If you decide to Visit Malta by plane there are many airlines that are having as destination Malta. During the spring, summer and autumn there is a very big variety of options.
