Berlin, Berlin... Welcome to a tour in the Capital of Federal Republic of Germany

Berlin is since the fall of the wall and the unification of Germany in 1990 again the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany (German: Hauptstadt der Bundesrepublik Deutschland). Berlin had this role of the capital also between 1871 until 1945. After the end of the Second world war and until 1990 the city of Bonn was the provisional capital of (West) Germany.

Berlin is known for its nightlife, its multicultural and open character and for the city with the most shops open during the night. A city that - almost - never sleeps... Welcome in Berlin!

History of Berlin

Berlin had since its establishment at the 13th century a period of big changes. Some archeological works at 2008 shown that the city was even older and put the establishment of the city back in 1183.

Berlin was gaining time with the time bigger popularity and importance. However the city went through different phases with really great periods but also dark times. However the city was able to go through all these phases and today to be a really lively, vivid and full of pulse center of Europe.

  • 1237 is stated as the official establishment of the city.
  • 1800 was a breakthrough year as the city has achieved a population of 170.000.
  • 1869 was built the Red City Hall (Rottes Rathaus) built.
  • 1945 is a year for Berlin that is full in ruins. 600.000 Buildings were destroyed. The population from 4.3 Million dropped at 2.8 Million.

What to do there

There are many places to visit in Berlin. On top of your list should be of course the Brandenburger Tor (Brandenbrug Gate) the momunent-symbol of the city.

Then you should definetely visit the East Side Gallely and walk across the remains of the Wall of Berlin that separated the West with the East Berlin.

Of course don’t miss the visit in the Berliner Fernsehturm in Alexander Platz. The tower is located in the heart of Berlin in Alexanderplatz and has a total height of 368 meters making it the tallest tower in Europe that is open to the public.

Where to stay there

You can check a Review that I have wrote about the Moxy Berlin Ostbahnhof Hotel

I recommend this Hotel if you plan to stay in Berlin for 2-3 nights. For more nights you might also consider other alternatives.

How to get there

Berlin used to have 2 Airports, the Airport Tegel and the Airport Schoenefeld. With the opening of the new Airport “Billy Brandt” located next to the old Airport Schoenefeld the city now has only one official airport for commercial flights. The new airport is connected with the Suburban Train Lines as well as regional Trains and Buses. It is located 24km south from Berlin city center.

Bus is also a convenient way to reach Berlin and the prices are very reasonable.

Train remains a very popular mean of transporation in Germany and of course in Berlin though the last years with the expansion of the rail network there are sometimes delays. However the trains are clean, fast and secure.

Last but not least, getting there by car should be of course not a problem. Berlin is connected via numerous of highways.
